Why does the car thump when the windows are down?
What you're hearing is a phenomenon called Helmholtz resonance, sometimes nicknamed the "car buffeting" effect.
Here's what's happening:
- As you drive, air flowing past the open rear windows creates areas of lower pressure outside the car.
- Air inside the cabin rushes out through the open windows.
- That outflow overshoots, causing the pressure inside the cabin to drop below the outside pressure.
- Air then rushes back in.
- This cycle repeats many times per second, creating pressure waves that make the air inside the car behave like a giant resonating chamber.
Your car is essentially acting like a giant bottle being blown across the top. The passenger compartment is the bottle, and the open window is the neck.
Why it feels like thumping instead of wind
The oscillation frequency is usually around 10–30 Hz, which is:
- too low to hear as a musical tone,
- but well within the range where you feel pressure changes.
That's why it sounds and feels like someone is repeatedly hitting the car with a giant pillow or a subwoofer playing an extremely low bass note. Your eardrums are being flexed by rapid pressure changes.
Why rear windows are worse
Rear windows often produce the strongest buffeting because:
- The airflow separates differently around the back half of the vehicle.
- The cabin volume and window opening happen to form a resonant frequency that is especially efficient.
- Front windows tend to disturb the airflow differently, making resonance less likely or less intense.
How to stop it
You can break the resonance by changing the airflow:
- Open a front window an inch or two.
- Crack the sunroof if you have one.
- Open the rear windows by a different amount (one halfway, one only slightly, etc.).
- Close one of the rear windows.
Even a small change alters the resonant frequency enough that the pressure waves can't build up.
This is the same physics behind why blowing across the mouth of a bottle produces a note—the only difference is that your car is producing a note so low that you mostly feel it rather than hear it.
